Adwa victory: Ethiopia to celebrate 121st Adwa victory
Addis Ababa, March 1, 2017 (FBC) – Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR), Abadula Gemeda said the existing generation has the responsibility to make its own history.
Abadula made the remark in connection with the 121st anniversary of the victory of Adwa, which will be celebrated across the country tomorrow.
The day will be observed particularly at the Mountains of Adwa, a place where the Italian force was defeated.
“The victory is a testimony that Ethiopians don’t give their country up to their enemies even though they are in an unpleasant situation,” Abadula told FBC.
The victory further teaches each Ethiopian to contribute something for the country during their lifetimes, he added.
The battle of Adwa was fought on March 1, 1896 between Ethiopia and Italy force near the town of Adwa, in Northern Ethiopia.
The Italian force, commanded by Oreste Baratieri, was defeated by Ethiopians, leading the country to be the only untouchable nation in Africa.
The victory of Adwa has a great deal of significance in Ethiopian and African history. It provided bases for many of the African Liberation movements against colonialism.
