Ethiopia inks historic Paris climate agreement

Ethiopia has signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

  • 174 states and the European Union have signed the Agreement, while  15 states have ratified it on April 22nd (Earth Day)
  • To come to effect when ratified by 55 UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Parties, accounting for 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions

Ethiopia has signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn signed the historic deal at the United Nations Headquarters on Friday (April 22, 2016). The agreement was also signed by 175 world leaders. In the event, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, "This is a moment in history." "Today you are signing a new covenant with the future," he added. Held on Earth Day, the milestone event comes four months after the deal was clinched in Paris and marks the first step toward binding countries to the promises they made to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
