Ethiopia, Mozambique deliberate on ways of enhancing Diaspora engagement

Ato Demeke Atnafu, Director General of the Diaspora Affairs at the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a Mozambican delegation, today (March 23, 2016), wherein the two sides exchanged views on issues of enhancing Diaspora engagement. Representatives from the National Bank, Investment commission, Customs Authority and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia also offered answers to queries from the Mozambican Delegation. Ato Demeke said the number of the Ethiopian Diaspora currently stands close to 2.5 million and added that their contribution is being channeled towards the overall national development. In such score, he maintained the legal and institutional frameworks are in place to make sure that the Diaspora remains an active partner in the national development. He further noted the Diaspora is now considered as a source of socio-economic and political capital in terms of expanding the level of cooperation between Ethiopia and their countries of destination; linking Ethiopian institutions and companies, and enhancing remittance and investment flow to the nation. The Mozambique delegation thanked the Diaspora Affairs Directorate General for having shared the expertise on matters of enhancing Diaspora engagement and looked forward to working with Ethiopia in the years to come.
