PrintEthiopia to host High Level Ministerial Meeting on investing on Human Resources for Health in Africa

A High Level Ministerial Meeting on investing on Human Resource for Health in Africa will take place in Addis Ababa between July 17 and 18. The meeting which will be held under the theme “Investing in Human Resources for Health for Sustainable Development in Africa” will coincide with the Third International Financing for Development Conference which Ethiopia will be hosting.

The High Level Ministerial Meeting will bring together Ministers of Health and Ministers of Finance from all Africa countries to deliberate on investing in Human Resources for Health as strategic investment in sustainable development in Africa.

Investments in Human Resource for Health remain largely low in Africa with a huge gap between the health worker supply and demand affecting the quality of service provision. Disease burdens characterized by a greater need for prevention, treatment and care of non-communicable diseases; demographic trends, including ageing population; technological advances; and broader development and macro-economic factors present an evolving challenge facing the human resource for health in Africa.

African countries with good experiences will take stock of successes and lessons learned and re-commit to concrete and tangible actions for human resource for health development. The outcomes of the Third International Financing for Development Conference relating to health and implication to the country context will be presented at the Ministerial meeting.

A call to action on investing on human resources for health in Africa is expected at the end of this High Level Ministerial meeting which is co-hosted by the Federal Ministry of Health and UNFPA. The one day Ministerial meeting will be followed with a field visit which will showcase good practices in Ethiopia in investing in human resource for health at community level.
