The Ethiopian Tourism Organization (ETO) announced on September 16 that Ethiopia's tourism destination sites across the country "remain safe to travellers" despite some tourism originating countries issued travel advisories warning their citizens to take extra precautionary measures following protests held in some parts of the country over the last few months.

The discussions held by the ETO with tour operators undertaking tour operation across the country, national peace and security agencies, regional tourism bureaus and tour guides attested the fact that tourists from all over the world visiting the country's tourism attraction sites and travelling in Ethiopia are safe and secure indicating that "there is no concern of peace and security," reads a statement issued by the ETO. Successfully holding two international sporting events, including EthioTrail 2016 – a running race competition taken place in Oromia Regional State on August 07 – and Tour Ethiopia –a cycling race competition taken place in Tigray Regional State from August 28 to September 02 - which attracted tourists featured Ethiopia as a safe and secure tourism destination.

The ETO extending New Year greetings noted that the last fiscal year (2008) ended with record tourist numbers close to one million coupled with increased travel media coverage. The increased media coverage combined with the hospitable culture is an expressive of Ethiopia's emergence as a top tourism destination.
