U.S. President Barak Obama’s planned visit to Ethiopia will strengthen mutual interests, according to Ambassador Girma Biru.

The Ethiopian Ambassador to the United States of America and non-residential Ambassador to Mexico and Jamaica told Ethiopia Media Network (EMN) that President Obama’s visit will be the first time a sitting U.S. president comes to Ethiopia in the 112 years diplomatic relations between two countries. This underscores bilateral relations between the two countries have reached new heights.

The Ambassador noted Ethiopia’s stature as an anchor of peace in East Africa has attracted U.S. interests in the region.

The Ambassador denounced the unfortunate opposition by some in the Ethiopian Diaspora to the President’s visit and urged those to rather engage with the President on what issues need to be highlighted.

During the visit, which Ambassador Girma described as timely, President Obama will hold talks with high ranking Ethiopian officials regarding security, economic, democratic and issues of good governance. He is also expected to discuss with African Union officials.
