Addis Ababa, August 30, 2016 (FBC) –Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has issued a press conference on current issues today.
The Premier began his press briefing after expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life and property due to the violence and conflicts occurred in some parts of Amhara and Oromia Regional States.
In his press briefing, Hailemariam touched on issues which he thought are the main causes for the violence and conflicts in both state.
The public at all levels are benefiting from the rapid economic growth registered during the past years; however, the increasing number of population and demand, coupled with lack of sufficient job opportunities posed current challenge.
Of the 40 million people who had been under the poverty line, Ethiopia managed to lift about 20 million out of poverty. The remaining 20 million Ethiopians are still under the poverty line, he said.
These people will come up with questions and need job opportunities to pull themselves out of these problems. If they don’t get response rapidly, other questions will arise and problems will emerge, he said.
The violence which occurred in some parts of Amhara and Oromia Regional States were resulted from lack of rapid response from the government for questions raised by the people and lack of enough job opportunities for the youth, he said.
Problems related to abuse of power also pulled back the momentum of the economic growth, he added.
Moreover, external forces who do not want to see Ethiopia take advantage of its natural resources are trying to worsen and spread out the violence by pumping a huge amount of money, he said.
The government will do all it can to tackle these challenges, including internal and external problems, he said.
For this, the ruling party, EPRDF, will look into itself with a reform program and the party had already decided to carry out the reform program in a meeting it held last week, he said.
Based on the reform program and after making new placement, the ruling party will come up with new government structure when the House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR) begins work early October, he said.
Commenting on questions that are arising in connection with identity and border issues, the Premier said the government is resolute to respond to such kinds of question as it did in the past.
Regarding the question of identity of Wolkait, the Premier said the question has not been presented to the Tigray Regional State so far. The regional state will see into the question if it is presented to it.
The Premier finally said the government has the responsibility to ensure rule of law and fully capacity to respond for questions arising from the people.
