President Barack Obama expressed best wishes to the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on the occasion of Ethiopia's National Day (Ginbot 20). President Obama said, "As the first sitting President to visit Ethiopia, I will never forget the energy and enthusiasm I experienced addressing not only Ethiopians in Addis Ababa, but Africans across the continent at the African Union." Despite the challenges imposed by El Nino, the President said, Ethiopia continues to make impressive development gains and hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing conflict and seeking peace. He said, "We value the longstanding partnership between our countries and particularly recognize your government's efforts and sacrifices in responding to the worst drought in 50 years and in promoting regional peace and security. He further said his government shares the vision of a democratic and prosperous Ethiopia in a stable and peaceful region and reaffirmed the commitment to work with the Ethiopian government to strengthen democratic institutions. "I wish you and all the Ethiopian people a joyous National Day," the President added.
