South Sudan Hopes of Peace and Stability With New Vice President

Dr. Riek Machar, has been sworn in as First Vice-President shortly after his arrival in the country's national capital, Juba, on Tuesday, (26 April, 2016). Upon arrival, in Juba Machar was received by several of his senior officials and a number of government ministers. Machar immediately took oath of office as first vice president before President Kiir. President Kiir in his speech noted "I have no doubt that his return to Juba today marks the end of the war and the return of peace and stability to South Sudan." He commended the international community – the UN Security Council, the UN Human Rights and humanitarian agencies, UNMISS, the Troika, AU, IGAD, EU, Russia, China, Japan and "our other regional and international partners" – for their positive efforts and commitment. The formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity is expected to come into effect in the next few days.
