Addis Ababa, September 5, 2016 (FBC) –Some 23 inmates have died after a fire outbreak at Kilinto prison in the outskirts of Addis Ababa last Saturday, said Government Communication Affairs Office (GCAO) today.
Some 21 inmates died from stampede, fire burns and suffocation. The remaining two were killed while trying to escape from prison, said the Office in a statement it sent to FBC today.
Two buildings, including mattresses, blankets as well as recreational and other facilities in which the inmates used in common were damaged by the fire.
Nine injured inmates and police members are receiving medical treatment. Police is investigating the cause of the fire after receiving bodies of the dead inmates.
The remaining inmates were transferred to various prison centers as most of the residential units at Kilinto were damaged by the fire.
The government of Ethiopia extended its condolences to families of the victims.
