Yumbe- The construction of Morta Bridge, which links Uganda to South Sudan, has delayed due to shortage of funds.

The Shs1.8 billion project deal was signed between Yumbe local government and South Sudan in 2013, in which the two parties agreed to equally share the cost.

Mr Bernard Ayiman, the district engineer on Wednesday, said the major work remaining is laying the deck.

He said the contract was for two years but now needs another year because the two countries are still soliciting for funds for the work.

“The major challenge is the cost of materials, which has gone very high. This requires reviewing the contract sum and follow up of money from South Sudan,” he said.

Mr Yasin Taban, the district chairperson, said although South Sudan authorities promised to pay the money, they have not yet done so.

“We have committed a lot of money in the project and we shall continue funding it up to its completion if South Sudan can’t comply,” Mr Taban said.
